WC/Laundry to Bathroom Conversion - Full Design & Build

A compact WC and laundry reimagined as a calm, contemporary bathroom through clever planning, refined material selection and thoughtful detailing. This project demonstrates how considered design can unlock both functionality and a sense of space within a small footprint.
The Brief
The clients wanted to transform a dark, cramped and impractical WC and laundry into a full bathroom, but were unsure how this could be achieved within the limited space. The new bathroom needed to feel light, warm and contemporary, with easy-to-clean finishes, considered lighting and subtle detailing — while also resolving where the washing machine could be relocated elsewhere in the home.
The Process
— Removal of internal walls to maximise usable floor area
— Replanning of the layout to create a walk-in wet room
— Zoning of wet and dry areas to improve flow and functionality
— Relocation of the washing machine into unused under-stairs storage
— On-site problem solving to resolve subfloor, plumbing and damp issues uncovered during demolition
— Lowering of the subfloor to achieve a flush transition to adjoining timber floors
— Selection of tonal tiles, vanity finishes, black tapware and considered lighting
— Careful coordination while the clients remained living in the home
The Result
A refined, light-filled bathroom that feels calm, spacious and effortlessly functional despite its compact size. Clever storage solutions — including a built-in shower ledge, mirrored cabinetry and minimal heated towel rails — ensure the space remains uncluttered and easy to use. The finished bathroom delivers a subtle spa-like atmosphere and added long-term value, becoming a key feature of the home and a catalyst for the clients engaging Hamer Design for their subsequent full house renovation.
